Master Bathroom

Empty Bathroom Walls (Add Artwork Or Leave Them Blank?)

I continued working on our master bathroom this past weekend, and while I didn’t quite get the second vanity finished, I did make progress on it. The drawer boxes are finished and installed, and the drawer fronts are made. Now I just have to attach the drawer fronts and apply the finish to the vanity, and I’ll have all three of the cabinet/furniture components (I’m not quite sure what to call them since they’re not standard cabinets) of that 12.5-foot wall finished.

If you’ve missed the latest progress on our master bathroom remodel (we turned the former master bedroom into a large and accessible master bathroom), you can catch up on all of the latest here:

I can see the finish line, y’all! It’s coming closer into view with each passing day, and I’m getting more and more excited about seeing this bathroom finally finished.

But as I get closer to that finish line, I’m starting to think through all of the little finishing touches that I need and want to add, and that brings me the two largest blank wall areas in the main area of the bathroom — the wall just outside the shower, and the wall just outside the water closet.

Here you can see the wall just outside of the shower…

Of course, I still need to add the wainscoting to the bottom half of the wall. And just around the corner is the shower, which looks like this…

And the on the other side of the bathroom, there’s an equal amount of wall space outside of the water closet…

And just around the corner, the water closet looks like this…

So I can’t decide if those two wall spaces need to be left alone (as in, blank, to let the wall finish have the spotlight), or if I should add something of interest to those walls.

I’m not one of those people who thinks that every single blank wall needs to be filled. At the same time, my decorating style is not minimalist in any way. I’m not quite one of those people who would call myself a maximalist, but if there were a spectrum from minimalist to maximalist, I’d definitely fall somewhere between the mid point and the maximalist end.

With that said, the obvious main feature of the bathroom is the mural behind the bathtub…

I don’t want to add anything that will detract from the mural. So I’m just unsure about what to do with those walls.

I had always envisioned those walls staying blank, but for some reason, I’ve starting thinking that I need to add something to them. Coordinating artwork? Small shelves? I just don’t know. But once I put any nail or screw holes in those walls, there’s no going back. That Venetian plaster finish isn’t something that can be quickly or easily repaired like a regular painted wall, so I need to be sure of my decision before jumping right into putting things on those walls.

I’d finish everything first and live with it a bit before deciding, though my tendency is to leave those blank and let the mural be the focus in there. The mural itself is pretty maximal (plus you want all eyes on the beautiful wood on those furniture pieces you have worked so hard on).

I agree with this sentiment. Let it simmer for a good bit. I think if you were going to add something down the road, perhaps more sculptural and less framed artwork. Maybe a candle sconce or something. Not sure, but I would leave it and live in it before you decide. It’s gorgeous as is.

I’m for leaving them blank – those walls HAVE their focal points in the doors on them if you can call contrasting, painted doors a focal…lol
Most anything you’d need to drive a nail into the beautiful, plaster finish for WOULD destract from the several gigga-gorgeous focal points in your dreamy master bathroom.
These little parts of wall space on either side of your doors give breathing space between those major focal points – causing the eye to go TO the well, thought-out focals you have spent SO MUCH time designing and bringing to life.
Perhaps, once you’re done with what you’ve already planned to do, you could add classic, Roman shades with inset ribbon trim to your windowed doors to match the centered window shade on the vanity wall – that would add emphasis to the centers of those seemingly, undressed side walls without destracting the eye from the major focal points you already designed and logically planned out.
Simple, classic Roman shades will give added elegance – good design in that they will add function + beauty to the room!
I totally identify with your style on the minimal to maximal spectrum – you add anything more to either side of those doors, and you will have crossed over to ‘grandma’ style – NOT in the stylish Grandma Trend – which defies your sensibility for a ‘little bit modern’ mixed with your ‘sophisticated classic’
aesthetic – as evidenced by everything you’ve designed for your home so far…
Another thought regarding whether to add more _____ or not to these small portions of side wall is – form following function…would more _____ add function? You’ve accommodated all the function you could possibly need in this room in all the most appropriate locations already…
the idea of adding anything more would be superfluous to your perfect design. There need not be anymore FORM if there is no more FUNCTION needed…
And then there is the design principal of balance – if you do anything to any one side of the doors, you will have to balance that on the other side of the door with something else…and you’ve got a landslide – now you’ve got to ‘do up’ the opposite door wall! Your
(and my) sensitivity for balance (and, often symmetry) will cause you to go all the way with each side of the doors and, each door wall being in balance – it will make you crazy! And, now there are holes in your painfully-installed, wall finish (remember how your muscles felt after installing the plaster?)…
And, the head work, time, energy, and $ of designing the superfluous balance of ‘stuff’ might not please you after all is said and done – then, you really aren’t DONE – niw you have to patch all the holes!
If there’s anything any room could use, it’s a plant here or there…short of an easycare, elegant orchid in an area where there’s diffuse light, you might incorporate a few other plants into the room – but, even those are best not in the way of traffic with a wheelchair and, not susceptible to fungus knats!
Hmmmm…🤔 A few, well-chosen, faux plants could be bring ‘life’ and could possibly be arranged to be un-encroaching into the needed traffic pathways…perhaps, arranged upon slender fretwork upon those narrow walls that would bridge from a proportionate rectangular ‘planter’ to a point shorter than the height of your doors…adding ‘life’, playing up the focal point of the Roman-shaded doors- and plants being a pretty neutral backdrop,
wouldn’t distract from your most important focal points…the fretwork could be hung a few inches from the wall from ceiling hooks…instead of from hooks in the walls….
But, again, these aren’t necessary IMO except to fulfill added, perceived function…which would be to add the ‘life’ that plants give to rooms…whether they are faux or real…
        🤩
For now, wait until you’re DONE with what you’ve GOT to finish! 😉

Agree. The mural is a wonderful, beautiful focus while the texture and movement in the walls provides interest without competing with the mural. The wood finish is another gorgeous counterpoint to the mural.

I agree with these sentiments. Finish everything else first, including other types of decorations, then live with it until you are sure you want to put something on the walls. Also, as others have said, research ways of hanging/displaying pictures using a rail or ledge to minimize putting holes in the plaster finish before you move ahead with that. It’s a beautiful, relaxing room; great job!

Exactly what I was thinking. If after it is all done you still want something, maybe some sort of 3D art, like birds flying or something, that ties into the mural? I’m not sure what I’m envisioning translates, but I have a few 3D butterflies in my guest room, and I think something similar to that might be cool. I also think you need to be careful in that shelves or traditional art on that wall to the right of the door might leave the left side unbalanced, but if you put something on the left that is just waaay too much stuff (to my mind) and you start to lose the clean, relaxing environment you are creating.

Odd idea. In older homes with walls they didn’t want holes in they had molding installed to hang pictures from. Why not install that same trim a foot or so from the ceiling. If you want tons of accessories, make it lower and thicker to hold small things on a ledge. If just a changeable gallery just the moulding that can hold the clips. You know whatever you do will likely change when you do the addition. Put something in that is flexible to your style.

      This is a brilliant idea!
Yes, Kristi, do consider adding a picture rail of some sort.
In my 1924 cottage, there is a picture rail around the bedroom ceiling’s perimeter, about one inch or so below the ceiling.
It’s been great for hanging a special picture-rail hook, & then fishing line from the hook, to the height at which I decide to hang artwork. I’ve had a lovely vintage sari draped flowingly across three long stick-bundles (each of honey-suckle, dogwood, & curly willow), & then used the hook-rail so that the sari traverses the far corner of the bedroom, creating a bo-ho semi-canopy effect. It makes a lovely focal point in the room.
I only mention all of this to give you a sense of the flexibility & potential offered to you, Kristi, by having a picture rail available to you. And you wouldn’t have to compromise your beautiful Venetian plaster!
But yes, do give yourself some time to soak in your fabulous tub & contemplate amid the bubbles what it is that might call to you, & ask to be included in your decor. Whatever you decide, I’m sure it will be delightful!

You will need a place for the hand towels & washcloth to hang after using them. Also a towel bar for the tub (or maybe you plan on using the hooks in the shower room?). You have several focal points, the beautiful mural & walnut cabinets, & wainscoting, not to mention the venetian plaster finish on the walls. Get it all done & accessorize w needed stuff. Then see if it needs more. I might be happy with a live plant hanging in front of the window- between the two vanities.

Between the beautiful mural, the walnut vanities, the lighting, and the amazing plaster, I personally think there is more than enough to look at. If I had to add anything, it would not be framed artwork or any more colors. Maybe some subtle metal flowers or birds in a gold finish that would echo the mural.

Inspirational quotes on plain glass framed with Walnut so the wall colour and texture show through the glass. Use fishing wire to hang so it looks like it’s floating and hanger could be up close to the crown moulding so the Venetian plaster isn’t damaged. Fishing line would look almost invisible.

I am not a minimalist, but I vote for leaving those wall spaces blank. You have a special finish on the walls, and the mural is statement enough. Whether or not you ultimately leave them blank though, I would take some time before making a decision. Live with it for a while, and make sure anything you decide to add is worthy of the beautiful elements already there.

You don’t want to compete with that mural, but what about something small, so it’s not too distracting, that ties to the mural. You’ve already done butterflies in the WC, but what about small birds – similar sizing as the ones in the mural. 3D versions, that come off the wall as opposed to 2D printed on paper. Small, specifically NOT to fill the space, just a little visual interest that ties into the mural and lets it still be the showpiece. Could be a fun art project for you or maybe a wall sculpture type piece for Etsy or local artist.

Will command strips damage the plaster? I know they are generally gentle on most surfaces. They can hold a lot of weight, so maybe you can try out artwork and shelves using them before committing.

I think it would be pretty to put small shelves by the WC, and a framed coordinating butterfly or bird from the mural near the shower.

Another thought came to me after reading what others have said. Maybe 3 air plants in glass globes hanging in that area to the right of the door (that goes outside for now). You bring nature to that side to echo all the flora on the mural and you also bring in more sparkly globes similar to the light fixture over the tub. But you attach to the ceiling and don’t have any impediment for movement on the floor like a plant stand. Just a thought. Here are some pretty hangers, though I was thinking something much simpler like glass globes: https://www.etsy.com/listing/834616859/air-plant-hanger-hanging-air-plant?gpla=1&gao=1&&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=shopping_us_ps-d-home_and_living-outdoor_and_garden-planters_and_pots-indoor_planters&utm_custom1=_k_CjwKCAjwsfuYBhAZEiwA5a6CDIk7pcJx_3Ek4OthPV7H-SM7MQRBa2ZzZDaawnXdGl7wh5fwMD2MqxoCdlQQAvD_BwE_k_&utm_content=go_12566097808_121162423162_507253854226_pla-371220264397_c__834616859_134482103&utm_custom2=12566097808&gclid=CjwKCAjwsfuYBhAZEiwA5a6CDIk7pcJx_3Ek4OthPV7H-SM7MQRBa2ZzZDaawnXdGl7wh5fwMD2MqxoCdlQQAvD_BwE

I agree Pat. Too much is too much and I’m afraid that’s what’ll happen if she puts things on both walls beside each door! I say live with it like this for awhile if or until she comes up with the perfect thing.

This dilemma is a “cart before the horse” contemplation because the mental steps are out of order. After you hang all the rest that will be necessary, such as towel racks, mirrors, etc., and put out the things that will find a home on top of horizontal surfaces — if you must, that would be the time to think about the wall space that may be calling your name to fill. T

To my eye, nothing more at all needs to be added. You have two bare walls for a quiet place to rest the eyes. (Note they are not symmetrical spaces.) But, since you asked, in the end I hope you will resist the urge.

The mural and the vibrant color already in place, says all that needs to be told of the story of this lovely room.

I would leave the walls blank. The mural, bathtub, your gorgeous cabinetry plus the vanity mirrors are all the features. The Venetian plaster walls are statements on their own and I think they are a resting place for the eye IMHO.

What if you added a mirror with a pretty frame?

That would take away from the pretty mirrors above the vanities. IMHO

On the sections of wall closest to the vanities you may want towel rings, other than that I would leave it alone for a while. See how you feel once you’ve had a few relaxing baths.

Well I was going to say leave it alone for now but seems everyone else has…so leave it alone for now! This is something that can change as the finished room grows on you. Love everything you have done thus far…but you are my hero anyway so there you go!

I would leave them blank. Once you feel finish the sinks and cabinets and add the wainscoting the walls will look finished. The beautiful mural is the main focus and I think any other artwork would detract from it.

I think I would leave them empty; not take anything from the beautiful mural! JMO.

Agree. I think the mural is enough, and the wainscoting will finish those walls sufficiently. I think all you need will be maybe a standing towel rack and a small table by the tub, to hold a beverage, candle and book while you soak!

I agree with the others. Wait until it’s finished and use/admire/enjoy it for a bit before deciding if you want to add other things within view of your beautiful mural.

I’m not a minamilist either, but anything on those walls will make the room too busy and detract from the beautiful mural. You already have sconces beside the mirrors, and adding to those walls will make your eyes spin with no resting place. The mural, the vanities, and mirrors are all focal points, you need some calm somewhere in the room, I I think those two walls are perfect the way they are. JMHO

Could you leave them blank for a while and live with it that way until you decide if you need more?

Another one here who says WAIT. When all the wainscoting, towel hooks and Roman blinds are installed you will get a different perspective about what then looks like ‘blank’ spaces. Also remember the spaces aren’t symmetrical and that could drive you nuts.

Give your eyes somewhere to rest and perhaps incorporate some faux plants as in the WC. Please don’t put up any ‘quotes’ even on glass. Way too overdone these days. Sorry guys who like those!

I can see the finish line and it’s awesome! What immediately came to mind are candle scones. They’d be great to light with a relaxing bath.

The birds in the mural, pulled out, on a clody sky background, would draw MORE attention to the mural and would look lovely.

I couldn’t help but notice that extra towels are being stored in the cabinet, which I live but the cabinet may not be the best place for the towels? What if you did some open shelving on the water going into the shower and store the extra towels there?

I’d complete everything and live with blank walls for a while. If you still feel like it needs something I’d head towards something more textural. A series of round rattan mirrors, metal wall art, something with feathers as opposed to a picture or colorful art. But let it be for a bit before heading into anything. If you do want to try something maybe go for something very lightweight that can be hung on a single nail? While patching the plaster finish would be very difficult sure it would be easier with small nail holes that are hard to see anyhow?

I’ve always been drawn to the lower part of your mural, esp. the Chinese lanterns and elephant ears. Maybe framed prints containing some of the plants (and birds) less visible in your mural?

Questions: What are you doing with the two doors? And why does the first shot of your WC look pink?

Everyone says to let the mural shine. I agree. I would also say “let the plaster shine.” So I would vote for nothing. I think you’ll know for sure when the room is completed.

I have had the same problem with that beautiful scenic paper. You certainly do not want to distract from it. I Took some of the birds and flowers etc from scraps of the left over wallpaper and applied them to the plain walls. It continued the theme, added to the walls but did not distract.
